Bringing Joy to Hospitalised Children

The Clown Doctors

Receiving a private visit from a Clown Doctor is a fantastic and very special experience for a child. When a clown enters a hospital, it’s such an unexpected event that it automatically transports people to the present moment. This is our greatest gift, because in this magical space anything is possible.

However, it’s important to remember that a hospital is not a circus… and in order to be close to the hospitalised child, the artist will have to adapt the rules of his game and act in perfect harmony with the work of the hospital professionals, the environment and the public he is addressing.

The Clown Doctor thus emerges as a new profession, a specialisation of the clown’s work. A professional who is neither a therapist nor an ordinary clown, our artists are professionals with training and experience in clowning – an art that requires a profound ability to understand the other person and their environment and to improvise on this basis. There is no show, there is no general public.

Improvised acting

The hospital clown has a specific approach for each child. As the children hospitalised every day have different dispositions, the hospital clown can’t prepare his work through rehearsal. When he enters a room to pay a visit, he can only draw on his sensitivity, the experience he has in his pocket and his ability to improvise.

Never "invade" a room

The Clown Doctors don’t make appointments for their “consultations”. They start at one end of each ward and finish at the other. A Clown Doctor never “invades” a room, but always waits for permission to enter. He first establishes eye contact and approaches with sensitivity and respect. Whatever the circumstances, the Clown Doctor never forces a child to laugh, nor does he insist on imposing his presence.

Make regular and systematic visits

The Clown Doctors visit once or twice a week and are never absent.

The children and health professionals know that they can count on the clowns to be there on a certain day of the week and at a certain time.

The Clown Doctors deconstructs reality but doesn't cover it up

In this game in which illness and treatment are transformed, children have the opportunity to see their hospital experience in a different light, taking on the leading role during their encounter with the Clown Doctors.

"I hope you never leave the hospitals, because the children need you. You always bring joy to the hospitals, and I can tell you, when I was there, you were the only ones who could cheer me up." Ana Patrícia Silva
